Dr. Anthony Bennardo of Cut-chogue died June 20 at the age of 58.
He was born in Brooklyn on Jan. 25, 1952, to Angelo and Benedetta Bennardo. After high school, he attended St. John’s University in Jamaica, Queens, and went on to earn his medical degree in Italy from the University of Rome.
He married Lois Genova in Jamaica, Queens, on Aug. 4, 1979.
Dr. Bennardo practiced medicine in Gramercy Park in Manhattan for 15 years before moving to Cutchogue and establishing his medical practice in Southold, where he’s practiced for the last 10 years. In 2007, he also earned a master’s degree in public health from Stony Brook University.
He was program administrator and medical director of the John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility in Yaphank and medical director at Peconic Landing in Greenport. He was also an attending staff physician at both Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead and Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport and served as physician for Greenport School District and the McGann-Mercy High School football team.
According to his family, Dr. Bennardo was a “loving friend, most faithful employee, but above all, a trusted physician to his patients, who always came first.”
Dr. Bennardo was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish in Cutchogue, where he was also a Eucharistic Minister and a past president of the parish council.
He is survived by his wife; his children, Blaise, Aidan and Christian; and his brother, Peter, of New Jersey.
The family will receive visitors today, Thursday, June 24, from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, June 25, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. Entombment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram.
