Flanders

Hello, friends and neighbors. I hope you are all enjoying the last weeks of spring. Summer is right around the corner and that means no school for the kids, which in turn means a little bit less stress for parents who struggle with kids that don’t want to wake up in the morning.

If you’re looking for something for your sixth- to 10th-grader to do during this two-month vacation, Southampton Youth Bureau has many activities. One of them is “Tuesdays on the Go.” The first trip is to Splish Splash Water Park on Tuesday, June 29. The fee is only $25 per person and includes transportation and admission to the park. These trips are supervised and chaperoned by Youth Bureau employees. Registration is required. The bus leaves Flanders Community Center at 3:30 p.m. For a list of all the bureau’s trips or to register, call 702-2425 or visit southamptontownny.gov/youthbureau, then click on “What’s Poppin’.”

The Youth Bureau has announced the winners of this year’s photography contest. The theme was “What Inspires Me,” and first place was awarded to John Davenport, 10th grade, Pierson High School. Second went to Kendal Stark, 9th grade, Riverhead High School, and third was awarded to Kaitlyn Ferris, 12th grade, also RHS. All contest entries will be on display on the second floor of Southampton Town Hall during June and July. Congratulations to all!

The Veritas Rebekah Lodge will host a card party on Monday, June 21, at 8 p.m. on the third floor of 220 Roanoke Avenue, Riverhead. The entrance is on Second St., with an elevator to the third floor. The lodge raises money to give to various organizations, and at this time of year they are making donations to CAP and the Relay for Life.

Since it seems I’m not the only one who forgets things, I have a few late birthdays to announce. Belated happy birthday to everyone’s sister, mom and friend Kathleen Shea, who celebrated on June 5. Kathleen, if you don’t already know, is Spencer’s mom. Belated happy birthday to Payton Dupuis, who celebrated her 13th on June 12, from Mom, Dad, your brother Ryan and all your friends and family. Belated happy birthday to one of the nicest people I know. My friend Ms. Charlotte Nelson celebrated on June 11 with family and friends. Ms. Nelson, as you may remember, decorates her home so beautifully at Christmas and also gives out awards for “Best Dressed” Halloween costumes to the children who trick-or-treat at her house. Happy birthday to my husband, Tom Doherty, who will celebrate on June 21, from me, Thomas, Michael, Kaitlyn, Grey and Teddy! I hope everyone enjoyed their special day!

Well, my friends, that is all for this week. I hope you enjoy your weekend and I hope to hear from you soon with any news you’d like to share with the community. Please remember to drive safely and put down those cell phones!
