A 63-year-old woman, who authorities said wrote thousands of dollars in
bad checks to East End businesses including one in Riverhead last year,
is now expected to appear in Suffolk County court for a bail hearing Friday.
The Suffolk District Attorney’s office said Nydia Vega fraudulently
purchased an $18,900 motorcycle from Eastern Harley Davidson on Route 58
in Riverhead in May 2009. The motorcycle was allegedly payment for work
being performed on her Westhampton Beach rental home.
Ms. Vega was originally due in Suffolk court Thursday.
Authorities also said she tried to pass bad checks at Hildreth’s Patio in Southampton and Sweet Anezka Lingerie in Westampton Beach. She told
the clerk at the lingerie shop that her husband had just died and she
was making the purchases to cheer herself up, the DA’s office said.
Ms. Vega was nabbed after she was caught trying to skip out on a meal
in Monmouth, New Jersey. She is now facing a slew of larceny charges,
including two counts of third-degree grand larceny.
“Our investigation has found evidence that the defendant wrote bad
checks for everything from new patio furniture to over $2,000 in
lingerie,” Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.
“Additional charges are likely.”
Ms. Vega also goes by the aliases Nydia Neubauer, Nydia Vega Reeves, Nydia Rothschild, and Lucy George, authorities said.
