Riverhead football falls to 0-2

The Riverhead football team fell to 0-2 Sunday when they were defeated by Newfield High School in Selden in a rare Sunday morning game.
Newfield had a 76-yard run to Riverhead’s 2-yard line on the first play of the game, and then scored two plays later on a quarterback sneak. They scored again on an 18-yard run set up by an interception for a 12-0 final score.
Newfield tried three onside kicks and recovered two of them, and Riverhead dominated the time of possession for most of the second half but couldn’t score.
The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, because of the Jewish holiday on Saturday, but lightning storms on Thursday night led to it being rescheduled to Sunday morning.
