Charter School meet and greet

Parents and community members are invited to attend a reception to meet teachers at the Riverhead Charter School at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at the school at 3685 Middle Country Road, Calverton. The building will be open at 6:30 p.m. for a tour of post-fire renovations. Call 369-5800 for more information.

Beginners labyrinth class

A workshop to teach the use and history of the labyrinth and featuring designs, dowsing, journal writing and group sharing will be presented on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at First Parish Church and The Grange at 5627 Sound Ave., Riverhead. It will be conducted by Lisa Barrow, a graduate of the New York Institute of Chinese Medicine, who has a background in acupuncture and herbology. A light lunch will be served. Bring comfortable shoes. Space is limited. Call 630-0626 no later than Sept. 20 to reserve.

Take action on estuary

The Peconic Estuary Program invites the public to its 2010 Peconic Estuary Call to Action Conference on Monday, Sept. 20, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the 230 Elm catering hall in Southampton Village.

Local officials and environmental experts will take part in interactive panel discussions of critical issues facing the estuary, including nitrogen in the bay, stormwater runoff, eelgrass restoration and habitat protection/restoration, and offer suggestions for key action items and initiatives intended to improve water quality and habitat value. Advice for artists

The East End Arts Council in Riverhead is offering visual artists the opportunity to consult individually with New York Foundation for the Arts MARK alumni Beth Giacummo and Joanne Dumas on Wednesday, Sept. 22, between 6 and 9 p.m.

The private 20-minute sessions are not for portfolio review or critique. Artists will receive practical, professional advice on aspects of the business of art such as preparing an artist statement, planning a website, sharing a new body of work, etc. Participants will be asked to fill out a questionnaire in advance.

Registration is limited. Please call 369-2171 to make an appointment. You may choose your consultant. The fee is $25 for EEAC members, $30 for nonmembers.

Defensive driving class set

St. Isidore R.C. Church of Riverhead will present the National Safety Council’s defensive driving course on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fee is $45. Participants who complete the course will receive insurance premium discounts and can reduce points incurred for violations. For information and registration, call 360-9720.

Church group on hiatus

The Prayer, Bible Study and Faith Sharing Group sponsored by First Parish Church UCC, which normally meets the first three Thursdays of each month, is taking a break for September. The group will reconvene Thursday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at The Parsonage, 7 Lagoon Court, Jamesport.

Chorale starts new season

This year’s winter concerts by the North Fork Chorale will feature the “Hallelujah Amen” from Handel’s “Judas Maccabaeus Oratorio.” Also on the program are “Irving Berlin’s Christmas” and John Rutter’s “Nativity Carol.”

Rehearsals are held Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. at the Southold Presbyterian Church hall. New singers are always welcome.

Concerts are scheduled for Dec. 3, 4 and 5.
