Take action on estuary
The Peconic Estuary Program invites the public to its 2010 Peconic Estuary Call to Action Conference on Monday, Sept. 20, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the 230 Elm catering hall in Southampton Village.
Local officials and environmental experts will take part in interactive panel discussions of critical issues facing the estuary, including nitrogen in the bay, stormwater runoff, eelgrass restoration and habitat protection/restoration, and offer suggestions for key action items and initiatives intended to improve water quality and habitat value. Defensive driving class set
St. Isidore R.C. Church of Riverhead will present the National Safety Council’s defensive driving course on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The fee is $45. Participants who complete the course will receive insurance premium discounts and can reduce points incurred for violations. For information and registration, call 360-9720.
Empire State info session

Church group on hiatus
The Prayer, Bible Study and Faith Sharing Group sponsored by First Parish Church UCC, which normally meets the first three Thursdays of each month, is taking a break for September. The group will reconvene Thursday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at The Parsonage, 7 Lagoon Court, Jamesport.
Chorale starts new season
This year’s winter concerts by the North Fork Chorale will feature the “Hallelujah Amen” from Handel’s “Judas Maccabaeus Oratorio.” Also on the program are “Irving Berlin’s Christmas” and John Rutter’s “Nativity Carol.”
Rehearsals began Tuesday, Sept. 6, and will continue each Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Southold Presbyterian Church hall. New singer are always welcome.
The concerts are scheduled for Dec. 3, 4 and 5.
HTC holds open auditions’
The Hampton Theatre Company will hold open auditions for “Desperate Affection” by Bruce Graham on Sunday, Sept. 12, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Quogue Community Hall on Jessup Avenue.
The play, a thriller concerning an actress and a “Mr. Right” who turns out to be not quite, will run weekends, Nov. 12-21. Rehearsals begin mid-September. Bob Kaplan directs.
Actors are sought to play Maddie (mid-20s to early 30s)and Richard (mid-30s to mid-40s). Readings will be from the script.

Fall at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck
Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in Center Moriches is now a year-round respite destination for children with disabilities.
Children up to age 21 can spend weekends there this fall and participate in activities including baking, arts and crafts, games and movies. Each session will have a unique theme and be limited to 14 campers, who will be supervised by five counselors.
Fall dates are Sept. 17-19, Oct. 8-10, Nov. 19-21 and Dec. 17-19. The cost is $350 per camper per session. Call 878-1070 or visit camppaquatuck.com.
Advice for artists
The East End Arts Council in Riverhead is offering visual artists the opportunity to consult individually with New York Foundation for the Arts MARK alumni Beth Giacummo and Joanne Dumas on Wednesday, Sept. 22, between 6 and 9 p.m.
The private 20-minute sessions are not for portfolio review or critique. Artists will receive practical, professional advice on aspects of the business of art such as preparing an artist statement, planning a website, sharing a new body of work, etc. Participants will be asked to fill out a questionnaire in advance.
Registration is limited. Please call 369-2171 to make an appointment. You may choose your consultant. The fee is $25 for EEAC members, $30 for nonmembers.
Northeast Stage auditions set
Northeast Stage will hold open auditions for an upcoming production of “Bottoms Up: The Private Lives of Noel Coward” by Daniel Rosenblatt. Auditions will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at Brecknock Hall in Greenport, or by appointment.
The play traces the life of Noel Coward and includes musical selections from his extensive songbook. There are three male roles as Mr. Coward at ages 20-30, 40-50 and 60-70 and three female roles as his leading ladies: Tallulah Bankhead, Viven Leigh and Marlene Dietrich, each age 25-50.
Scripts will be provided; a prepared monologue is optional. Rehearsals start Sept. 20. The production is co-directed by A.D. Newcomer and James Pritchard. Musical direction is by Dee Laveglia. Performances are scheduled for Nov. 5, 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14 at Brecknock Hall.
