Center Drive residents: ‘There’s no jail here’
There are about 10 homes on Center Drive, a small road in the Reeves Park section of Riverhead.
There is no jail there.
The county jail, however, is located on 100 Center Drive in the Riverhead zip code, but in the section of Southampton Town often called Riverside.
Apparently, that’s a problem.
“When someone puts in the county jail on Center Drive, the GPS is bringing them up to Reeves Park and they’re having these people driving around Reeves Park looking for the jail, so they can bail somebody out or go visit them,” Town Councilman John Dunleavy said at Thursday’s work session.
Because of this, some residents of the Reeves Park version of Center Drive have asked the town to rename their street.
In addition to the Reeves Park Center Drive and the one in Riverhead, there’s also a Center Street in South Jamesport.
“I would suggest you don’t use ‘center” in the new name,” said Laura Calamito of the town attorney’s office, who was explaining to the board how roads are typically assigned new names.
In the past, the town required residents to submit a petition signed by a majority of the residents of that street in support of the proposed new name.
“Let them suggest a name,” Supervisor Sean Walter said.
