Calverton: Can’t believe it’s already fall

Can you believe it’s Columbus Day weekend already? The East End is glowing with beautiful colors — the orange of the pumpkins, the jewel-like colors of the mums and the green grass. Enjoy it all, because there are only 78 days until Christmas (sorry, I had to throw that one in). You can find Christmas items in many stores already. I find this totally ridiculous since Halloween is still a few weeks away.

The students at Riley Avenue Elementary School are enjoying fall. The kindergarten classes are visiting the apple orchards, while other students are venturing out to the pumpkin fields. Have fun!

School will be closed on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 11. Enjoy your day off.

I encourage all kids to enter the pumpkin- and vegetable-decorating contest at the annual Riverhead Country Fair, which will be held this Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at 10:10 a.m. My kids have entered this contest many times and they have always had so much fun. And while you’re at the fair, why not look for a few Christmas presents, too!

Belated happy birthday to Riley staff member Maryann Soika, who celebrated on Oct. 1. We hope you had a perfect day.

A very happy second wedding anniversary to my son Rob and his wife, Jaime, who will celebrate another happy year together on Oct. 11. From all your family and friends, much love and best wishes for a perfect day,

Karen Kosciusko now has her photos that my friend John Hall had found in the attic of the main house at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club. I had heard from a few of Karen’s relatives, and in the end the power of the press paid off for all involved. It just goes to show that not only can the Internet help reunite, but so can good old-fashioned newspapers.

That is all for this week. Take care, be safe and I shall talk to you soon. Bye.
