Madeline “Marge” Makson

Former Riverhead resident Madeline “Marge” Makson died Oct. 26 at Renaissance Gardens of Brooksby Village in Peabody, Mass. She was 85.
She was born Dec. 5, 1924, to Jan and Mary (Potaczala) Pierog in New York City, where she was raised and graduated from Washington Irving High School.
On Jan. 27, 1946, she married Walter Makson. According to her family, Ms. Makson “would tell you she made it to the Great White Way right out of high school, as an elevator operator at 120 Broadway. She always added it was a job that had its ups and downs.”
Ms. Makson also worked as a waitress before joining the staff at North Fork Bank in Mattituck, working in the check department. Family stated that, “in describing herself, Marge would say her real job was to help brighten a person’s day with a joke. She made everyone who met her smile.”
Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by her sons Bob, of Riverhead, Stan, of Wilton, Conn., and Don, of Wakefield, Mass.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Family received visitors Oct. 29 at McDonald Funeral Home in Wakefield, Mass. A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 30 at the Chapel of Brooksby Village in Peabody, Mass.
