Riverhead police cruiser involved in crash

Police said Dayne Baldwin, 45, of Miller Place was driving a utility truck east on East Main Street when he attempted to make a left turn and cut off the westbound patrol car driven by Officer Emil Breitenbach, according to witness accounts. The crash occurred on East Main Street near the intersection with Howell Avenue, just feet from Riverhead Town Hall and police headquarters.

Mr. Breitenbach, who suffered lacerations to his face and left hand, was taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of “non-life threatening injuries,” police said.

Mr. Baldwin, who was uninjured, was issued a summones for failure to yield right of way.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
