Calverton: The newest member of the grandma club

12/13/2010 11:08 AM |

I have waited for so long to say this — I’m a grandma! My son Rob and his wife, Jaime, became parents to a beautiful baby girl on Dec. 11 at 5:24 p.m. Julia (named after our “Gramie”) weighed 6 pounds 4 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. What an amazing joy it is to hold a baby and know she is part of you. My friend Shirley Robinson welcomed me to the grandma club. Everything she told me about being a grandmother is true, and it’s only been two days. Jaime and Rob, enjoy your little girl. God bless you all for a perfect life together.

Riley Avenue Elementary School news: The mural-hanging ceremony at Peconic Bay Medical Center was, once again, a wonderful success. The murals were created by the students at Riley. The chorus did a great job entertaining the patients and staff and spreading holiday cheer. Riley’s holiday concert at Riverhead High School was attended by lots of family and friends. The “High School Heroes,” which include RHS students, will come to Riley and work with first-graders and help them with their school curriculum through May.

December birthdays at Riley include Kay Duzel, Pam Owen, Dianne Tuthill and Artie Apicello. Best wishes for a happy birthday.
Florence Danowski of Calverton is a wonderful person. She will celebrate her birthday on Dec. 18. Happy birthday from all your family and friends. We all wish you a perfect day. I have to ask you, Florence — do you love that reclining chair or what?
Soccer player Jordan Fulcoly has been named to All-League 2010. Jordan plays year round for the Middle Country Cruzers U17 premier-level team, which is ranked No. 2 in New York. The team has earned a place in the national tournament at Disney World on Dec. 27. The best of luck to you. Let’s go, Cruzers!

The annual Ryan Hautsch Memorial Brunch will be held Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Jamesport Manor Inn, with many thanks to Matt Kar. All proceeds support the Ryan Hautsch Scholarship Fund, for local culinary arts students. Ryan was planning to become a chef when his life was suddenly cut short. A buffet brunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $30 for adults, $20 for teens and $12 for children. Call 722-0500 for your reservation.

One more baby thing, then I’m done … for now. Dad caught some scallops the other day. Within the bunch we found a very tiny baby scallop, about the size of a dime. Of course my daughter Jamie could just not see this little baby not live, so we headed off in the dark to drop it into the bay. Then she said, “How about Atlantis Aquarium?” You can now visit Nemo (OK, she named it) there.

That’s all for now. Have a great week, be safe and I shall talk to you soon. I love you, my little Julia.

  • didn’t Connie Kepert try to build a skate park and fail?

  • Levy can find $250,000 for a skate park at the same time he’s closing the the the over 100 year old county owned John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility. Levy should skateboard in the park and get a concussion!!

  • This is a bad idea, it will bring in more drugs in to mastic then we already have. They close up meth dens all over Mastic Beach and they reopen the next week. Skate Park is not what we need now!

  • Your nuts, with all the drugs all over Mastic and Shirley this is the last thing we need in brookhaven. They are building a Drug Rehab in the William Floyd School now, you think a free roaming Sakte park is ok. this will bring Crime, fraffiti, Drugs, gangs, and more problems then we already have in mastic Beach. This Skatepark is a dumb idea. The dumb idea keep flying in Mastic!

  • Ms Oldsmobilegirl, its fine if you want to attack me,at least give a idea of what we should do with our kids to keep them out of trouble or stay home on the computer all day.i had a 1967 442 and 1969 rag top 442,so at least we share the Olds factor.

  • Well that’s a first, a skate park at the old Drive-in in RP??? Bonner looking for Votes..We need a target for jobs for these kids, not another hang out.

  • I am the attendent. I have spoken to many of the children (adults as well)they can’t wait to get into the park, jumping the fence to get in.speaking to them as they are asked to leave,I get nothing but praise about the park… I have to remind town tax layers that this park can be a good thing for the mastic area, that has gotten a bum rap for hearts. There MUST be a strong town presents for this park to work. So people please think twice before you down a park like this. How much are our children worth?

  • I guess you are another cranky person that doesn’t care about the kids and a viable, legitimate place for them to skate, and I guess you don’t care about all the other stores that will close if Target gets built in RP. You only care about what you want, and God forbid there be another opinion different from yours. Read some of the other postings on this site, that go back a very long time…a recreational type venue at the Drive-In is very well supported in this town. As far as bonner looking for votes, she’ll get a lot of them. She’s a true representive of the people.

  • I think it’s a great thing to provide a place for kids to skate. How did the skate park in Riverhead do? Maybe with community support this could even be an organized thing… Make it a great park and a hot spot for great skaters to go. Have a yearly competition at the park. Let’s see what these kids can do. Put a positive spin on it instead of assuming it’s going to be a drug den.

  • Its nice to see someone else sees it my way,the future is our kids even if we get one kid out of trouble because of this park, its worth it.

  • it’s the same skate park. It took six years to come to fruition.

  • I’m surprised this took 12 years to complete. When I was younger, I loved skating with my friends and we would’ve loved something like this. Perhaps I could’ve used it 12 years ago, but now I’m pretty sure I’ve surpassed the acceptable skating age… 31 in case your interested.

For the skeptics: The addition of a skate park is a positive addition to any community. Think of it as a baseball field, soccer field, basketball court, etc. and try to not let the fact that skaters look different than other athletes fuel your prejudices. The allegations that this skatepark could, in any way, be linked to drug use in our society is completely without reason.

For the town: How could you even consider charging $275 for residents to access something that their tax dollars pay for? This is what businesses are supposed to do… Not towns. Thank you, Mr Panico, for your opposition to this. Would they even consider doing this with a public park/baseball field/racquetball court/etc.?

  • A simple skate park took 12 years to happen. For you nay sayers, there has been a skate park of sorts for years between the HS and the bagel shop, which the kids named the “hood park”. For those who are belly aching about funding, the money has been set aside for this idea for well over 5 years. Considering that Brookhaven town gets the short end of just about every stick, it’s nice to see something positive happening here.

  • I thinks it’s a wonderful idea for the kids, it will get them off the streets where just about everyone doesn’t like them skating, they get hurt and are hazardous to people driving. I know, my son got hit by a car on his skateboard. But charging them 275 per yr is too much. Most of these kids can’t afford Karate school or any other venue that costs 35 per month which those venues cost. The town should rethink on charging any fee for using this park like any other park available for children in any of the towns.

  • Get back on the board! I’m a 34 year-old computer professional and still skate every once in a while. Of course I don’t try the things I used to, but just cruising around and doing simple tricks is enough. The day I can’t Ollie is the day I am officially OLD.

  • Old guy – skating is one thing that keeps kids OFF drugs. It’s a sport like any other and kids who get into it devote their days to improving their skills. It gives them a direction. Kids use drugs when they are bored.

  • I might just do that! I just returned from snowboarding in VT and although I wasn’t catching huge air it was still a great feeling. Out of curiosity, what kind of computer work do you specialize in?

  • Very cool… I love it, but my body doesn’t seem to recover as rapidly as 15 years ago.

    Thanks!

  • brookhaven has to get there lazy ass workers to go and supervise this park instead of having me drive 30+ minutes to find out the parks not open because its not supervised

  • and plus its been open for nearly a month and they still have no superviser? I mean cmon get your act together

  • drugs wont be a problem. all kids wanna do is skate, not do meth. We’re skaters not drug dealers

  • where is ur mind? skateboarders are not drug dealers..u are a stereo typical bitch…and crime is everywhere not just in ur town…everywheres got problems and u really think kids can skate doped out there face or something…skateboarding takes skill focus and is its own natural high. so thats what i gotta say to this post…skateboarders always gettin a bad rep nothing new even though its a growin sport thats only gettin bigger watch any skate video and tell me they are on drugs. stoppin here or else ima write a damn novel about this.

  • i geuss 250 a year to let them have fun….FAIL!

  • me and my friend went today and were unable to skate because we didnt have the proper “padding” cmon skaters know what what there getting into we wouldnt be doing things we wouldnt be able to handle
