Man shot during home invasion fracas

A Riverhead man was shot in the back Tuesday night after a woman tried to scare off two robbers during an attempted burglary at a Riverhead home.

Riverhead Police said two burglars attempted to break into the Union Avenue home about 11:30 a.m. The suspects then began fighting with 34-year-old Vashon Barrow, who lives in the house, and Alfred Lee Marshall, who lives nearby.

Nessa Gilmore, 28, who also lived in the house, then grabbed a shotgun that the residents said they kept in the house for protection, police said. The gun accidentally went off, striking Mr. Marshall in the back.

Mr. Marshall was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of “non-life threatening injuries.” Peconic Bay Medical Center declined to release Mr. Marshall’s status Wednesday morning.

The two burglars fled the scene and no arrests were made. Police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to call detectives at 727-4500.
