Shoreham-Wading River Column: HS polar bears started the year off right

It was nice having time off for the holidays, but it’s good to be back now. I missed you all.

Well, here we are in 2011. Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? Let’s hope that you did and that you’ll stick to them.

Some very brave and good-hearted students from Shoreham-Wading River High School made a promise to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation by doing something chilling and daring that only comes around once a year: the Polar Bear Plunge.

Not putting off their vow, they got right to it. At noon sharp on Jan. 1 at Sills Beach in Shoreham, the spirited and courageous polar bears jumped in the water for their cause, hence the phrase ‘Freezin for a Reason.’ This year’s cold-weather dip in the Sound, which attracted only the most stouthearted individuals, was coordinated by Amanda Hearney and Kaitlyn Taddeo.

There were several ways that one could contribute to this Make-A-Wish fundraiser: by becoming a plunger, by recruiting sponsors, by making a monetary donation or by purchasing a “Freezin for a Reason” T-shirt. As usual, the plunge was a big success. Congratulations to the Shoreham-Wading River High School polar bears. You started the year on the right foot. Or should I say the right paw?

There’s no better way to begin on the right foot than recognizing that you must begin your child’s education experience. If your child will turn 5 on or before Dec. 1, 2011, or you know a Shoreham-Wading River child who will turn 5 by this date, please get the word out. Kindergarten registration for 2011-2012 started Jan. 10 and will continue today (Thursday) and Friday, Jan. 13 and 14, between 8 and 11:30 a.m. in the district office at the high school. Required for registration are: proof of residency in the SWR district (see website for requirements), completed registration forms, child’s birth certificate (original and copy) and immunization records signed by the child’s physician. Your child does not need to be present for registration. Registration packets are available at the district office, Route 25A, Shoreham.

New beginnings are exciting. They are full of promises. The slate is clean and you are starting out fresh. So, breathe in the cold crisp air, clear your mind and start again.

Have a great week, everyone.
