SWR school board meets with recruitment firm

Shoreham-Wading River school board members had their first meeting with a recruitment firm Monday as they prepare to search for a replacement for the district’s outgoing superintendent, Harriet Copel.

Dr. Copel announced in December that she will not return to the district when her contract expires June 30. Earlier this month the board announced it would hire a firm to assist in the search.

During executive session Monday, the board met with the recruitment firm School Leadership. Board president Jack Costas said he was impressed by the firm’s presentation.

“They were knowledgeable and astute,” Mr. Costas said.

He said the firm’s services include meetings with the board and focus sessions with key community stakeholders such as the PTA, school administrators, faculty and residents in order to develop a profile of the district’s ideal superintendent.
Mr. Costas said the board plans to meet with other firms as soon as possible, but did not specify a date.

“We’re making progress,” he said.
