James M. Slater

James M. Slater of Calverton, formerly of Cutchogue, died Feb. 6 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 93.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to James and Mabel Slater, he served as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army in both the Korean and Viet Nam wars. He received two Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.

He was a member of the 32nd Infantry Regiment; the Riverhead Masonic Fraternity; Sterling Chapter 216, Order of the Eastern Star in Greenport; Sewasett Chapter, OES in Port Jefferson; and was a commander of American Legion Griswold Terry Glover Post 803 in Southold. Mr. Slater was a faithful Episcopalian and church leader, vestry and warden, and an avid gardener.

Predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Alice, he is survived by his wife of 13 years, Dorothy; his daughters, Kathryn (Kenneth) Dale of New Hampshire, Alice (John) Dummler of New Jersey and Margaret (John) Skabry of Peconic; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four stepchildren; and seven step-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday, Feb.  8, 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.,  at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport by the Reverend Paul Wancura. Burial with military honors will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
