• ‘The Cosmic Earth Bull Series,’ an exhibit of paintings by Sheila Isham of Southampton, can be seen through April 1 at Suffolk County Community College’s Lyceum Gallery at the Eastern Campus. It’s the inaugural show at the newly built gallery in the college’s new Montaukett Learning Resource Center.
Ms. Isham’s monumental oil paintings depict animal herds along with “primal figures, partners and guardians of the wild beasts,” according to a press release. Call 548-2536.

• The East End Arts Council and New York Foundation for the Arts have announced the availability of Strategic Opportunity Stipends ranging from $200 to $1,500 for Nassau and Suffolk county artists in all visual disciplines as well as writing, music and theater. The grants help enable artists to take advantage of unique opportunities that will benefit their work and/or careers.  The application deadline for opportunities occurring between June 1 and Oct. 31, 2011, is 5 p.m. April 20. Application forms and guidelines can be found at nyfa.org/SOS or eastendarts.org.

• An exhibit of Grey Gardens art by five Long Island artists is on view at Green Earth Café in Riverhead. Grey Gardens was the East Hampton home of socialites “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” Beale, cousins of Jacqueline Onassis. The artists include Frank Latorre, Mym Tuma, Don Duga, Irra Verbitsky and Lois Wright, who once lived at Grey Gardens. The show also includes Grey Gardens memorabilia.

• ‘Mac Wells 1925-2009: A Memorial Exhibition will open Saturday, March 26, at Art Sites gallery in Riverhead. Mr. Wells, an abstract artist, was a resident of Orient whose studio overlooked Long Island Sound. A press release says, “A student of Buddhism, Mac translates his inner calm on canvas.” The show features “pieces he kept close at hand, such as a favorite painting, which hung in his living room, and the sketches made to explore ideas.” After the show closes, on May 8, the works will be added to an archive of his art in Lewiston, Maine.

“Details & Reflections,” photographs by Raymon Elozua, sculptor, ceramic artist and photographer, will run concurrently with Mr. Wells’ work at Art Sites. Mr. Elozua’s photographic explorations involve large sculptural installations using enamelware and mirrors from abandoned bedroom sets salvaged from deteriorating vacation bungalows in Sullivan County, N.Y. His aim is “to memorialize the individuals and lives behind these containers” through “dynamic abstractions that emphasize the vibrant details of decay.”
A reception for both exhibits is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 26.
