Health Beat: Ovarian cancer awareness program

• Dr. B. Hannah Ortiz, director of gynecologic oncology for the East End Health Alliance, and Linda John, founder and CEO of Corporate Family Network  serving cancer survivors and advocates, will speak at a free Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day program at East Wind Inn & Spa in Wading River on Saturday, April 9, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The program, moderated by Dr. Francis Arena, will also include a “meet the Experts” forum, workshops and a support services showcase. It’s sponsored by The SASS Foundation for Medical Research, a nonprofit committed to education, research and education in hematological and malignant diseases. To register, call 516-365-7277.

• Utopia Home Care is offering free caregiver training classes at its Riverhead office at 180 Country Road, Riverhead, on Wednesday, April 13, 9:30-4:30 p.m. The training will cover ambulating a person with a cane or walker; transferring a patient between bed, wheelchair and bathroom; turning and positioning a patient; skin and incontinent care; use of a bedpan and urinal; and use of a Hoyer Lift.
