Group talks lawsuits to halt Wading River projects

The civic group that last week announced it’s launching a “Save Wading River” campaign to fight for a building moratorium in Wading River is now threatening legal action if Riverhead Town doesn’t pump the breaks on three proposed building projects in the hamlet.

The group, called the Riverhead Neighborhood Preservation Coalition “is meeting with land use experts to determine the group’s legal options, even as it tries to persuade the Riverhead Town Board to insist that the mega-development be tabled until its economic, environmental and quality-of-life impacts are collectively assessed,” the coalition’s president, Dominique Mendez, said in a statement issued Tuesday.

Group members were expected to show up at Tuesday’s 2 p.m. Town Board meeting in Riverhead to press the issue.

Meanwhile, Ms. Mendez said she is meeting with Brookhaven officials after Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner — who is heading that town’s ongoing Route 25A Corridor Study, a comprehensive and community-oriented project that looks at 25A from Miller Place to Wading River — after Ms. Bonner showed up at last week’s Wading River Civic Association meeting to express support for halting building in favor of an impact study.
