Aquebogue-Jamesport: symposium on disabilities; ‘Springtime at Hallockville’

The Riverhead Town Handicapped Advisory Committee is sponsoring a symposium for adults and children with cognitive and physical disabilities, this Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Senior Citizen Center, 60 Shade Tree Lane, Riverhead. The symposium will include informational demonstrations presented by various organizations and businesses that service adults and children with disabilities. Even if you are personally unaffected by disabilities, this free event will serve as a great education for the entire community.

The application deadline for the Jamesport Fire Department Scholarship is approaching. The department will be awarding two $750 scholarships and two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who live in the Jamesport Fire District or whose parents are Jamesport firefighters. Some restrictions apply. Applications are available at the guidance offices of Riverhead and McGann-Mercy high schools or at the Jamesport Fire Department, 25 Manor Lane. The applications must be submitted to the guidance departments by April 15 or mailed to Jamesport Fire Department, P.O. Box 54, Jamesport, NY 11947.

Living Water Church presents “Behold the Lamb,” a story of the life of Jesus. Performances are scheduled for Palm Sunday weekend. This amazing show combines music, dance, drama and comedy. It is appropriate for families of all ages, although some of the Passion scenes maybe a little intense for very young children. There are still seats available for Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16, at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday matinée is already sold out! Hallockville Museum Farm is working very hard to find creative ways to educate and encourage the “Facebook Farmville” generation to connect with its real farm roots here on the North Fork and on Long Island. Coming up on Saturday, April 16, from 1 to 4 p.m., Hallockville will host “Springtime at Hallockville,” an afternoon celebration of spring targeted toward local and visiting families. Activities will include an egg hunt for children and adults, a young farmers’ obstacle course, gardening and chicken-raising demonstrations, family photo portraits, a cow bingo raffle and more. Rain date is April 17. This great family event is co-sponsored by Riverhead Building Supply and Northforkparents.com. Admission for members is $5 per person; $15 for a family of four. Also, check out the “New Agricultural Heritage Tour.” A creative, cooperative effort of Hallockville Museum Farm and the Suffolk County Historical Society, the downloadable guide offers a 21-mile tour of agricultural history in Riverhead Town.
