The Rev. George Bogan

The Rev. George Bogan of East Moriches, former senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Riverhead, died April 4 at the age of 88.

Born March 25, 1923, in Elizabeth, N.J., to Mary (Krupey) and Adrian Bogdaniuk, he joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served until 1946 in the occupation forces, stationed in the South Pacific, the Philippines, New Guinea, Guam and Japan.

He earned a Bachelor of Theology degree in 1953 from Shelton College and an M.A. in religious education from New York University in 1969.

The Rev. Bogan was senior pastor at Calvary Baptist Church from 1963 until 1991 and continued with part-time ministry work and preaching commitments after his retirement. He was pastor of visitation at Wading River Baptist Church and in recent years returned to Calvary Baptist Church, serving as associate pastor until 2009. For over 20 years, he was chairman of the ordination committee for his regional church association.

The Rev. Bogan is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Louise; his daughter, Jayne Van Sant of Bloomfield, N.J.; and two grandchildren.

Visiting hours are scheduled for Wednesday, April 6, at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Thursday, April 7, at 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Pastor Kenneth Huber officiating. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery.
