Southampton puts off police chief appointment

The Southampton Town Board postponed a scheduled vote Friday to appoint a new police chief to replace James Overton, who retired as of Friday after serving as chief since 1990.

Supervisor Anna Throne–Holst said the board postponed the vote because it had not reached a conclusion on which candidate to support.

Two candidates have been interviewed for the position. They are Southampton Town police Captain Anthony Tenaglia, who has been the second in command under Chief Overton over 10 since 1990, and Southampton Village police Chief William Wilson, who has held that position since 2006.

The supervisor said no decision has been made on when the board will take up to vote again.
