Riverhead: Free rabies clinic and children’s book week

The Girl Scouts spent time with the Garden Club ladies after school April 12, busily mixing pulp and seeds to create “grow cards” as one of the activities in their Ecology and Environmental Horticulture Unit. During the month, each scout will come up with 10 ways to conserve water. They will also be making a list of things their families recycle. Maybe they will use some of that recyclable trash to create their sculptures for the next month’s art competition!

The next iloveriverhead meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Riverhead Free Library. A guest will speak about what has been done elsewhere, what we are doing and what we can do as a community to revitalize downtown. The public is welcome. For more information contact Nancy Swett at [email protected]. Hope to see you there.

Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton will hold a free rabies clinic for cats and dogs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at 2259 River Road in honor of the American Humane Society’s “Be Kind to Animals Week.” For information or to register, call 727-5731, ext. 2. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers. Canned or dry cat and dog food donations gladly accepted.

Children’s Book Week events, May 2-8, introduce young people to new authors and ideas and encourage them to discover the world through books. Be sure to visit the children’s department of Riverhead Free Library and pick up a Wimpy Kid activity sheet. Also, May is Get Caught Reading Month, a national campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read. Children caught reading will receive a sticker from the children’s department staff and a chance to choose an item from their reading treasure box. Wow, how great is that! Check out the Riverhead Free Library services available for newborns to those 100 years plus.
