Health Beat: Celebrate Older Americans May 17

• Riverhead Town’s Senior Center on Shade Tree Lane will host a celebration of Older Americans’ Month on Tuesday, May 17, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., including information on heart health lifestyles, shopping on a budget, label reading, top 10 nutrition tips and a special presentation of Zumba Gold, the latest exercise craze that combines Latin and international music with a workout. • The Dental School at Stony Brook University is recruiting participants for a research study of Type 2 diabetics. If you are 35 or older, being treated for Type 2 diabetes, have at least 16 natural teeth and your gums are sore or bleed when you brush them, you are eligible to participate. The purpose of the six-month study is to determine whether standard periodontal therapy is effective in reducing A1C levels in Type 2 diabetics. Study participants will receive free dental exams and teeth cleaning as well as modest compensation for time and travel. Call 632-3964.
