SWR superintendent candidates to be interviewed this week

SAMANTHA BRIX FILE PHOTO | The Shoreham-Wading River Board of Education is interviewing candidates this week to replace Harriet Copel, who will leave the district in July.

The Shoreham-Wading River school board will begin interviewing candidates this week to replace outgoing superintendent Harriet Copel.

Consultants from School Leadership, the firm hired by the district to conduct the search, delivered more than 30 candidate resumés to board members on Monday, president Jack Costas said.

Board members will interview five applicants recommended by the consultants and will either chose two finalists or, if they aren’t satisfied with the candidates, dip into the greater pool of candidates and select a new five. The identities of applicants will not be released until they are finalists, Mr. Costas said.

Mr. Costas said finalists will be interviewed a second time immediately after they’re chosen, but he said board members don’t have an exact date to select a new superintendent.

“Whatever time it takes to find the most qualified and the most fit is however long it will take,” he said.
