Aquebogue-Jamesport: Meeting House music and much more

Memorial Day weekend and the summer season begin this weekend in Jamesport with the opening of the “Music at the Meeting House” series at Jamesport Meeting House. This year, the season opens with Corky Maul and his Hidden City Orchestra, which will present an early music program from the history of the Meeting House on Saturday, May 28, at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available at Duffy’s Deli in Jamesport, the Blue Door Gallery in Riverhead and Cecily’s Love Lane Gallery in Mattituck and cost $15; students are $10. On Saturday, June 4, local band Eastbound Freight will be back performing more of their popular bluegrass music. For more information visit jamesportmeetinghouse.org, email [email protected] or call Richard Wines at 722-5170.

A Taizé service will be held tonight, Thursday, May 26, at 7 o’clock at First Parish Church, UCC. Taizé is a simple, ecumenical worship service featuring contemplative music, prayer and meditation. All are welcome. There is no fee; a freewill offering will be taken.

The Nature Series at The Grange continues tomorrow, Friday, May 27, at 6:30 p.m. with a talk on kitchen garden installation. For more information, call Jeff Frank at 728-0218.

Hallockville Museum Farm’s community yard sale will be held Saturday, June 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We rented a table last year and it was so much fun! We sold some items, made new friends and connected with a lot of wonderful neighbors and visitors to the North Fork. If you are interested in having a table call Herb Strobel at 298-5292 for reservations or for more information.

Also on Saturday, June 4, at 10 a.m. at join the Hallockville Community Gardeners for a tomato cage building workshop. They’ll help you construct strong and durable cages that will be used in the garden for years to come. Workshop registration is $20, which includes materials for one cage. Additional cages can be constructed for $10 each. I love tomatoes but I hate the cages. This is a great idea! For more information, call 298-5292 or email [email protected].

Since summer is just around the corner, start planning for kids’ adventures and educational fun. Hallockville has great summer camp programs for children ages 6-12 and are currently accepting applications. Call Herb or email [email protected]. Weekly summer camps run from July 5 through Aug. 12. Discounts are available to members and for those purchasing additional weeks.

As I mentioned last week, we are forming a special education PTA in Riverhead School District. This is an exciting and necessary step for parents and teachers to work together to provide a free and appropriate education for children with special needs. Riverhead has some great programs and services. Parents need to be educated and supported to know how to access information and programs and communicate their child(ren)’s needs and abilities to the district. Email me for more information.

We have an early deadline tomorrow. So please get your news to me for next week’s issue by this evening or very early (7 a.m.) tomorrow. Have a great Memorial Day weekend!
