Are you a veteran planning to get married this year? Better yet, are you and your betrothed both veterans? Your wedding at Brecknock Hall at Peconic Landing could be free.

That’s the offer being made for one lucky couple, preferably from the North Fork, by Peconic Landing and several area merchants who will combine their talents to make for one very special day.

Appropriately enough, the day Peconic Landing has chosen is Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, Veterans Day.

The idea came out of a brainstorming session last year about possible uses for the restored mansion, according to spokeswoman Diane Radigan. She’s looking for an appropriate couple and will accept applications through Wednesday, June 15.

A committee of Peconic Landing residents, a staff member who retired after a long career with the Marines and Suffolk Times editor Tim Kelly will select the winning couple, whose names will be announced on July 4.

The winners will not only get to have their wedding at Brecknock Hall, but their reception will be catered by Matt Kar from the Jamesport Manor Inn. The flowers will be courtesy of Ivy League Florists in Southold, and Miche Bacher of Sacred Sweets in Greenport will provide the wedding cake. Greenport photographer Caroline Rochetta has volunteered to take wedding pictures.

All the participating vendors were eager to help out, recognizing that veterans are heroes, Ms. Radigan said.

The selection process will favor a couple from the North Fork, although others from Suffolk County will be considered if no local couples apply. While only one person must be a veteran, extra credit will be given if both are, said Ms. Radigan.

Judges will also consider the number of tours of duty served.
