Reese W. Walters Sr.

Longtime Riverhead resident Reese W. Walters Sr. died June 20 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 90.

He was born Feb. 1, 1921, to Evan and Barbara Walters in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., where he was raised and educated.

He married Virginia A. Vetter in 1944 in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945, and was deployed to Africa during World War II.

Mr. Walters worked in maintenance at Southampton Hospital. Family members said he enjoyed sporting events and loved coaching Riverhead Little League basketball on Saturday mornings.

Mr. Walters was predeceased by his wife in 2000 and his son James, Spc. 4, in Vietnam in 1969. He is survived by his children, Barbara Groat of Rochester, N.H., Thomas, of Calverton, and Joan Stoner, John and Reese Jr., all of Riverhead; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was also predeceased by eight siblings.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, June 24, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Interment with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at Calverton National Cemetery.
