Dunleavy recovers after mild heart attack, surgery

Councilman John Dunleavy

Riverhead Councilman John Dunleavy was hospitalized at Stony Brook Medical Center after suffering a mild heart attack Monday.

Mr. Dunleavy first went to Peconic Bay Medical Center before he was transferred to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where a stent was implanted.

“They want to keep him in the hospital for a few days, but if I know John Dunleavy, he’ll be back in no time,” said Councilman Jim Wooten.

He said Mr. Dunleavy will take a week off once he is released from the hospital.

Town Board coordinator Linda Hulse, who’s been handling calls about Mr. Dunleavy, said she spoke to him Wednesday morning.

“He sounded excellent on the phone when he called me,” she said.

Mr. Dunleavy cannot receive visitors at the hospital and his family asks that phone calls be made to Ms.Hulse’s office rather than his home because his family has been swamped with calls.

Ms. Hulse said she’s also been getting a lot of calls about the councilman, as many people have expressed concerns.
