Slide show: School’s out in Riverhead!

Riverhead School District students celebrated the start of their 2011 summer vacations Friday.

Roanoke school principal Thomas Payton dismissed his school’s 361 students at noon Friday. He said 62 fourth graders will be moving up to Pulaski Street School for the 2011-12 year.

His final words to his teachers were, “Thank you for an incredible year. I appreciate it.” It was Mr. Payton’s first full year at Roanoke.

Riverhead firefighters also joined in on the dismissal celebrations by opening the garage doors at the Roanoke Avenue fire headquarters and blasting their trucks’ horns and sirens.

Young, smiling faces could be found everywhere in Riverhead, though some students and teachers shed some tears.

The News-Review snapped photos at Pulaski and Roanoke.
