Calverton: Adopt a pet from Kent at Shirley Veterinarian Hospital July 16

I had a nice week. I ran away with my daughter Jamie to her home points north (the outskirts of Albany) and forgot about life for four days. The first stop was Monticello, where my friend and former Riverhead resident Lori Sheppish now lives on a mountain, with a pool, a tiki bar and a big barbecue grill. What else does one need? We had a ball. Then it was off to Jamie’s house and the most amazing Fourth of July fireworks you’ve ever seen. We sat on a hillside and saw about 45 minutes’ worth of fireworks shot off at the Empire State Plaza, and also saw a gorgeous fireworks display along the Hudson River as far as the eye could see. We also visited our friends the Egar brothers in the Hudson Valley and spent some quality time picking cherries and apricots in their orchard. It was a great time.

Happy “10 years together” to James and Emily Kretzschmar of Manorville, with so much love from your mom and aunt Peg. May you continue to have a wonderful life together. Congratulations.

Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton has many new best friends for you to adopt and who need a loving, safe home. Kent will be at the Shirley Veterinarian Hospital on July 16, along with other organizations. Not only can you bring home a new friend, but there will be raffles, refreshments and educational clinics.

Belated happy birthday to everyone’s favorite guy Stanley Lojko, who celebrated on July 9. We hope you had a great birthday, Stanley. From all your friends and family, we hope your day was really cool.

Belated birthday wishes also go to Herb Hulse, who turned 95 on July 7. Herb now lives in San Antonio, Texas. We hope you had a great day.

Calverton resident John Yakaboski turned 98 on July 11. We hope you enjoyed your day. And finally to Calverton resident Patti Rambo, who also celebrated on the 11th. From all your family and friends, we hope you had a fun celebration.

Happy birthday to Baiting Hollow resident Fritz Lewin, who celebrates his 84th on July 15. It usually rains on his birthday. Let’s just see what happens. From your daughter Dawn and all your family and friends, have a great, relaxing day, Fritz. Best wishes for a happy birthday also go to Cayleigh Orlowski, who celebrates her 2nd on July 20, from your mommy and daddy and big brother, Cormac. We hope you have a perfect day.

A baby shower was held Saturday for Lindsay Kulesa, wife of Scott Kulesa (Baiting Hollow’s really great Late Model race car driver). The shower was held at the home of Jane Kulesa (Scott’s mom). Now we await the little guy’s arrival. The best of luck to you both. Get some sleep — something you will both treasure in a few months.

Please help those poor little turtles who are trying to cross the street. My neighbor Joan was so upset when, just as she was about to help one cross the road someone ran it over. That’s truly awful, so do help them.

The local sweet corn is so sweet and delicious that you must get some. It’s the real deal and is farm stand fresh. I’d like to thank the lady who stopped by to tell me she read my column and is buying local to help the farmers. We do so appreciate it.

Take care, be safe, and I shall talk to you soon. Bye.
