Riverhead man pleads not guilty to raping 11-year-old girl

A Riverhead man is being held on $100,000 bail after Riverhead Police arrested him for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl, officials said.

Rufino Martinez-Ortiz, 23, of Riverhead pleaded not guilty to first-degree rape in Riverhead Town Justice Court Wednesday morning.

He was arrested Tuesday and was being held for arraignment the following morning in Town Justice Court, police said.

He “had previously had forcible intercourse with an 11-year-old female in the Riverhead area,” police said in a press release. Police said Mr. Martinez-Ortiz knew the victim and that it was not a random attack. Police did not release additional details involving the incident.

The girl was not identified because she is a minor and an alleged sex crime victim.

Wearing a gray “wife beater” tank top and with his hands cuffed being his back, Mr. Martinez-Ortiz was mostly silent and spoke through a translator during his appearance.

Riverhead Town Justice Richard Ehlers issued an order of protection for the victim. He set bail at $100,000 in part because Mr. Martinez-Ortiz had no identification on him.

  • Si Se Pueda! (Yes We Can!).

Let’s hurry up with giving amnesty, er, I mean “a path to legalization” for all the wonderful illegal, oops, I mean “undocumented” immigrants. Between the near daily drunk driving incidents by our unlicensed, uninsured, “undocumented” friends from the south, and the alarmingly frequent secual assaults on minors, I’d say Long Island sure has benefited from our new found diversity.

  • Yep… “through a court translator”…. “No identification”… Well, gee… what else is new?

  • I wonder if he is buddies with Juan Carlos Flores – Campos — who took his landscaper boss’ truck (unauthorized) and drove it (unlicensed) into the side of the Baptist church in Greenport Tuesday night? After damaging the church, he fled the scene.

We’re seeing more and more crimes perpetrated against us by people who come here to milk our system, disobey our laws and yet expect us to cater to them. What part of send them home don’t the sympathizers understand?

  • Illegal or Not Illegal who the hell cares … what he did was nasty and wrong .. and needs to suffer in jail for what he did ! Believe it or not there are even legal dirt bags around!

  • Agreed. If this guy’s name was John Smith I would be just as outraged. However a seperate problem arises when you recognize that he is also an undocumented immigrant. The fact that him and millions like him are willing to break the law to get into our country, shows me that they are not willing to obey our laws at all. It may be as simple as tax evasion on their earnings over a lifetime, or it could be something much worse, as with this case. Also, if this guy is put in prison, he will eventually get out…he’s a young guy. How do you register him as a sex offender if he doesn’t have a SSN or other means of tracking him?

  • Right, but you wouldn’t say, “Let’s round up all the white guys named John.”

Just because you’re not aware of the undocumented immigrants that wind up becoming journalists, doctors and lawyers doesn’t mean that they don’t exist.

Our prisons are over represented with minorities. Why do you think this is the case?

  • ANOTHER illegal alien rapes a child! If only a police officer had pulled this guy over for a taillight, maybe then he would have been deported before he could do this! This is why every illegal should be deported.

  • because the white guys named John, are probably here legally!

When do we say “enough”? Sit in Southold Court and see just how many people are ticketed and given a fine for driving without a license, or no insurance and registration, and see how many can’t pay and don’t.

  • I agree, let’s stick to the issue here: The guy allegedly raped an 11 year old..horrendous. The fact that he may be illegal, should not be the main issue…..Send the guy back, or throw him in jail…forever… There are many legal folks, who have committed the same horrible crimes against humanity. In the news recently Jaycee Duyard spoke about being rapped repeatedly , Phillip Garredo, a white dude, and gave birth to his kids. This was a husband and wife duo.. .Labeling folks is a dangerous business……I’m just sayin’

  • Says who? You? Good! However, I’m not prejudiced.. I just can’t deal with the coddling that this entire counry is doing for those who cannot “pay their way”. FDR came up with welfare… those were on it, got back on their feet (WAYYYYYYY BACK) and got off the system. They didn’t stay on the merry-go-round, leaching off of taxpayer like you and I for the rest of their lives.. and their childrens lives…

Now, switch it up to todays times.. young, strapping men who can do the work of 5, choose to go on welfare and sit around OR work off the boks, 14 to a house, 22 kids, fines from an unregistered, uninsured, uninspected vehicle.. and my o my, where on earth do they come with the $2,000.00 to pay off the court fines? From the pay that they collect at the end of the week, that they divide up between the 14 ppl living in that house, and Gee Whiz!!! They’re still in the damn system.

Those who need the financial backing from the government (because of disease, workman’s comp, or a host of other issues) have to wait 4 months in order to receive it because of the overcrowding within the institution, brought on by the loopholes within the establishment which was originally brought into play to give hard working people a hand up not a friggin hand out!

  • If an undocumented immigrant becomes a doctor or a lawyer they are stealing ten times what the manual labor workers are. They don’t pay taxes on a $250k salary and that adds up a lot faster than the taxes on a $50k job. Also I think the fact that there are some nice undocumented immigrants is little solace to the parents of the 11 year old rape victim. He never should have been here.

  • I don’t say let’s round up all the Rufino’s either. What I say is let’s round up all the illegal undocumented immigrants in this country and send them back to their native countires…it doesn’t matter to me if that is Mexico, Guatamala, Canada, France, or anywhere else. If we discover someone here illegally, they should be prosecuted or sent back. Can’t we get everyone of them for tax evasion?

  • In order for someone to claim benefits for unemployment, workers comp, etc. means that they are in the system. They pay into these programs as a safety net. If they are not on the books they will not be able to claim benefits.

I’m happy to live in a nation that does not let those who live here (and their children) starve to death or lose their life due to untreated illness.

When an individual or a church helps others it’s charity, when a government helps others it’s socialism?

  • Your anger should be directed at the perpetrator, not an entire class of people.

  • that class happens to be called criminals…again, it is not an issue of race, only legality.

  • that class happens to be called criminals…again, it is not an issue of race, only legality.

  • helping someone in need is one thing….when I drive by a section 8 home and the owner is driving a BMW, I have a major problem with that. Worker’s comp and unemployment are paid into, but a lot of programs are not. For instance, public schools not only neglect to ask for social security numbers, they are not allowed to require them. How much do you think it costs to put a million children through school for their entire childhood? Like Anne Marie said, it shouldn’t be a hand out, it’s meant as a hand up.

  • Do you think that our country would be better if public education was denied to an entire class of our population? The children of immigrants are not guilty of anything.

Look, I understand that you see this as a black and white issue (no race pun intended), but there are so many injustices in the world. It’s strange to me that people get so angry over those who have very little and receive a pittance versus those who have everything and get tax cuts and bail outs.

We have to get used to the idea that we all deserve to have our basic needs met regardless of whether or not we are lucky enough to be born into it. What would you do if you and your family were born into a shitty life in a shitty country with not enough to eat? Would you say, “Okay, I’ll just suffer through this because I don’t want to piss off some rich prick on Long Island?” Or would you do whatever you could? I know what I would do for my family.

  • Would your sympathy for the victim and her family be any less if they were here illegally?

My point is that this is not about illegal immigration. It’s about a sick coward who committed a vile act. It makes no sense to judge an entire group of people by the actions of one disgusting human being.
