Edward L. Magel

Riverhead resident Edward L. Magel died Aug. 2 at Riverhead Care Center. He was 82.

He was born Dec. 21, 1928, in Brooklyn, to Catherine (Witterhoult) and Francis Magel. He married Gloria M. Cerillo on Sept. 2, 1948, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Magel worked as a repairman for Holmes Protection Company in New York City.

He was a diehard Yankee fan, family members said, and enjoyed reading to his great-granddaughter.

Mr. Magel is survived by his wife; his children, Mary Fink of Calverton, Edward, of Germany, Steven, of Georgia, and Arlene Beatty of California; his sisters, Margaret Pierson, Ann Calenda and Katherine Smith; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will take place Sunday, Aug. 7, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A service will be held Monday, Aug. 8, at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery.
