Investigators: Riverside fire could be arson

A Sunday morning fire at an abandoned Flanders Road home in Riverside is being investigated as a possible arson, according to Southampton Town Police.

The Riverhead Fire Department responded to the fire just before 6 a.m. Sunday and Riverhead fire officials expressed suspicion that the fire was deliberately set, according to police. The building was not occupied and there were samples of charred wood removed from the scene for analysis by the the town fire marshal’s office.

Fire marshal John Rankin said Monday that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Officials did not say what led to the suspicion that the fire might be arson.
