Rita Vaubana Comando

Rita Vaubana Comando of Melbourne, Fla., died Aug. 26, 2011, at the age of 90.

She was born Aug. 29, 1920, to Luigi and Maria (Massina) Scafa aboard the S.V. Vauban in English waters during her parents’ emigration from Italy. Her official birth certificate was written from Somerset House, London.

She grew up in Brooklyn, where she married Joseph Comando on Oct. 14, 1950, and where they raised their children before moving to Smithtown. They retired and divided their time between Grahamsville, N.Y., and West Palm Beach, Fla.

Ms. Comando was a seamstress and homemaker for most of her adult life.

Predeceased by her husband in 1995 and her grandson Austin in 2010, she is survived by her sons, Joseph, of Florida, Michael, of Jamesport, and David, of Cutchogue; her brothers, Anthony and James; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 31,  and Thursday, Sept. 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A service will be held  Friday, Sept. 2, at 7:45 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Mattituck, with Father Joe Staudt officiating. Interment will be at Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty, N.Y.
