Update: Cops locate next of kin after fatal crash

Diego Ajcuc Zurdo

A pedestrian who was fatally struck by a car in Riverhead Sunday night left behind a wife and son in his native Guatemala, according to Southampton Town Police.

Investigators said 40-year-old Diego Ajcuc Zurdo, originally from Chuarrancho, Guatemala, was hit by a vehicle that was traveling north on Flanders Road as he was trying to cross the street near Suffolk Federal Credit Union’s Riverside branch at about 8:30 p.m.

Mr. Zurdo was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead where he died.

Police were initially unable to locate his next of kin, but eventually did so late Monday, according to Detective Sergeant Lisa Costa. It was unclear where he was living locally.

The driver of the car was identified as George Cast of Garden City. No charges were filed against him, but the Mercedes Benz he was driving was impounded to police headquarters for a safety inspection, according to Lieutenant Robert Pearce.

The investigation is continuing, police said.
