Riverhead Column: Hispanic Heritage Month at library

Brian Smith, junior vice commander of VFW Post 2476 in Riverhead, welcomes the community to a fundraiser barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 2 to 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults (chicken, corn on the cob and a potato); children are $2.50 (hot dog and corn on the cob). Soda and beer are included. There will be a special raffle for a Compaq laptop along with a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are on sale at Post 2476 or from members. Call 631-664-1462 and reserve yours today. The Glenwood Lassies of Glenwood Village put on a fashion show and luncheon Sept. 10, with more than 100 women in attendance. Fashions were by Dress Barn. There were many raffles, a 50/50 drawing and door prizes to help launch their fund drive campaign for the 2011-12 season. Funds collected were donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation, Cleary School for the Deaf, Riverhead Fire Department, Riverhead Ambulance and East End Hospice. The Lassies wish to thank all those who supported them, especially Barbara from Dress Barn who helped with the fashions. A good time was had by all!

Hispanic Heritage Month will be observed through Oct. 15 at Riverhead Free Library, depicting the contributions made by Hispanic-Americans to the United States. Explore the many diverse and rich cultures with activity sheets, books displays and so much more.
