Riverhead Column: Goings-on at the Garden Club

Pumpkin-picking time is just around the corner. Visit the local farm stands to get your cornstalks, hay bales and other decorations for a beautiful fall display. Most important, be careful while driving on the roads as this is also the season for heavy traffic. Be sure to enjoy yourself this time of year.

Riverhead Garden Club members and Girl Scout Troops 2309 and 1689 planted 250 daffodil bulbs in the Marge Lawrence Star Garden at Roanoke Avenue Elementary School in memory of those who died on Sept. 11.

On Sept. 13 the RGC held a small Standard Placement Flower Show, titled “North Fork Treasures,” at the home of Wally and Nancy Binger. Every room, including the wraparound porch, was overflowing with beautiful floral designs. The public was invited and treated to refreshments served in the garden. First-place design winners were Annabell Cirruzzo, Judy Kayton, Regina Rouge and Marie Vasco. Annabell Cirruzzo took the Designer’s Choice Award for her wonderful “Sea Shells by the Seashore” design. Nancy, the flower show’s chairwoman, said the hanging design titled “Swing Time,” won by 90-plus-year-old Marie Vasco, was especially challenging. All four entries were extremely creative, making the judging difficult. The horticulture division’s first-place winners included Kathy Banschback, Nancy Binger, Helga Breen, Margaret Brosnan, Bertha Fricke, Sandy Howell, Rose Marie Hubbard, Lucia Mueller, Eileen Norton, Margaret Riebel, Mary Rogers, Regina Rouge, Pam Ryan, Margaret Quinn, Judy Shivers and Fay Young. Joan Wilkinson won for “Love Lane,” a beautiful planter design.
