Today in sports: Riverhead field hockey heads east to Greenport

BOB LIEPA FILE PHOTO | Melodee Riley led Riverhead with 13 goals last season and received all-county honorable mention.

It’s been a full week since the Riverhead field hockey team played a game — a 4-0 shutout over Hampton Bays for the Blue Waves’ first win of the season. The team gets back at it today for the first of back-to-back games. The Blue Waves travel east today to face Greenport/Southold/Shelter Island (4-2).

Expectations weren’t supposed to be very high for Greenport this season. The Clippers were seeded 10th out of 12 teams in Division III.

But the Clippers are proving to be a feisty group. They won four of their first five games to start the season before yesterday’s loss at home to Rocky Point. The Clippers fell 2-1 against a veteran Rocky Point team that lost in the Class B playoffs last year to previously unbeaten Sayville.
