Well, perhaps the third time will be the charm.
An eagerly awaited girls tennis match between Bishop McGann-Mercy and Southampton that has implications on the Suffolk County League VII championship has been rescheduled yet again. Players and coaches from both sides hope today will be the day.
The match started last Thursday, but was halted shortly after it started because of light rain that made for slippery conditions on Southampton’s courts. With play suspended, the match was to resume the following day, but inclement weather prevented the match from being played. So, now the two teams are to return today at 4 p.m. to give it another shot.
A win by McGann-Mercy (12-2, 7-2), coupled with a loss by Westhampton Beach (9-2, 8-1) to William Floyd (10-3, 6-3) today, would bring the Monarchs a share of first place, their fourth straight league title and fifth since 2000.
McGann-Mercy’s first doubles team of Erica Blanco and Shannon Merker, who reached the Division IV final on Tuesday, have a 14-3 record. They are paired up against Southampton’s Elizabeth Grun and Paulina Kepcyznska.
Southampton is 2-9, 1-8.
