Georgia Babich

Calverton resident Georgia Babich died Nov. 18 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

She was born in Newark, N.J., to Peter and Katherine (Stratigatos) Boutsikaris.
Ms. Babich was employed as a beautician.

She was predeceased by her husband, Sam, in 2003; her brothers, Anthony, Theodore and William Boutsikaris; her sister, Calliope Cardiasmenos; and a nephew, Apostle Cardiasmenos.

She is survived by her nieces, Barbara Boutsikaris Brook, Cynthia Boutsikaris Ferguson, Lynn Ramistella and Kathy Sharpiro; her nephews, Wayne Bileski, Dennis Boutsikaris, Peter and Steven Cardiasmenos, Robert Sharpiro and Michael Wengryn; her cousin, Elaine Rigas; and a godson, Timothy Cardiasmenos.

Georgia was a religious, independent woman with a zest for life. She was trained as a Red Cross volunteer and a certified nurse’s aide before graduating from beauty school and working many years as a hairdresser in Jamaica, N.Y., prior to retiring to Calverton, N.Y., with her husband, Sam. They spent their time together with family and friends and traveled to such places as Greece, Turkey, Canada and Alaska, among many other destinations.

In her youth, she was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. She spoke several languages and had a passion for reading. Georgia served as recording secretary for her homeowners association in 1995. She also enjoyed bingo, cooking, crocheting and following her sports teams.

Georgia was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Newark and later St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Jamaica, N.Y., and had belonged to the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society since 1964.

Known as GeeGee, she greatly loved her family and friends and will be missed by all who knew her.
