An elderly couple was hospitalized Monday after a car struck a mound of dirt and became airborne for a few seconds before hitting a utility pole on Sound Avenue in Riverhead, according to a witness on the scene.

The couple were traveling east on Sound Avenue just past the entrance to Martha Clara Vineyards when the woman, who was driving a red Honda Accord, ran off the road and hit the patch of dirt, according to witness Diane Valentine of Greenport.

Ms. Valentine reported the accident to authorities shortly after 3 p.m.

“All of a sudden she veered and hit that telephone pole,” Ms. Valentine said, pointing to a damaged pole. “She was airborne for a minute.”

Ms. Valentine said the woman, who she described as elderly, complained of chest pains after the accident.

The couple was taken via ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

Traffic was stalled along Sound Avenue while emergency crews tended to the scene.

The Jamesport Fire Department and the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Company responded to the scene.
