Raymond J. Cardinal of Calverton died Jan. 16 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 77.
He was born Jan. 18, 1934, in Riverhead to James and Florence (Dickerson) Cardinal. He married Irene Munson on Oct. 30, 1977, and was the owner of Ray Cardinal Painting in Calverton for 50 years.
Mr. Cardinal was a past president of both the Peconic Lake Estates Civic Organization and Riverhead Sportsmen’s Club, and a member of the Oysterponds Rod and Gun Club, Twin Forks Gun Club and Riverhead Elks Lodge.
He was an avid hunter and loved beagles, according to family members, and he enjoyed gardening.
Mr. Cardinal is survived by his wife; his daughter, Marie Hentschel of Texas; his son, Raymond Jr., of Calverton; his stepchildren, Linda Knatz of Laurel and Andrew Besch of Cutchogue; his brothers, Charles and James, both of Calverton; his sister, Henrietta Bennett of Greenport; and three grandchildren.
Visiting hours will take place Thursday, Jan. 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a service will also be held at 8:30 p.m. Interment will be private.
