RECAP: Four SWR wrestlers win league titles

BILL LANDON PHOTO | Shoreham-Wading River junior T.J. Fabian was named Most Oustanding Wrestler of the League VI Championship Saturday night.

A storybook season for the Shoreham-Wading River wrestling team culminated in a League VI Tournament title Saturday at Miller Place High School. The Wildcats, 25-0 in dual meets, won their first team tournament title since 2005.

Four wrestlers won league titles, including the Most Outstanding Wrestler, junior T.J. Fabian at 120 pounds. He won a 3-2 decision against Matt Leshinger of Sayville. Fabian won his third straight league title after placing second as an eighth-grader.

Senior John Keck also won his third league title after winning a 4-2 decision in overtime at 152 against Nick Princiotta of John Glenn. Keck, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the county, improved to 41-1 this season.

At 160 Zak Mullen won a 12-5 decision in the finals against Tyler Yastrub of Westhampton. Mullen dominated throughout the tournament. He had a 53 second pin in the quarterfinals and 9 second pin in the semifinals.

At 171 Joe Bennett also won his first league title with a 1:29 pin in the finals against Robert Stafford of Amityville.

The Wildcats will send nine wrestlers to the county championship beginning Friday. James Szymanski finished second at 99, along with Dominic Pirraglia at 182 and Dan DeVito at 220.

Jack Taddeo finished third at 113 and Max Goldfarb was third at 195.

The Wildcats tallied 212 points to win the title. John Glenn, the reigning champ, was second with 194 1/2.
