Track & Field: SWR junior places fourth in pole vault championship

Shoreham-Wading River High School junior Tom Sager finished fourth at the Suffolk County boys pole vault championship Wednesday night at Shoreham-Wading River High School.

Sager had a vault of 12 feet.

Two Riverhead athletes — top-seeded Jonah Spaeth and No. 3 Charles Villa — did not fare as well. Spaeth entered the competition at 12 feet and did not clear the bar, while Villa finished at 11-6.

Smithtown West’s Karl Nilson won the county title at 13-3 and qualified for the state championships along with runner-up Joe Miceli of Miller Place, who had a vault of 12-6.

In the girls competition, Alyssa Pisani of Shoreham finished at 8 feet and Megan Safranek completed her attempts with a best of 7 feet. Second-seeded Brianna Cristiano advanced to the state championship with a vault of 10-3 and Sachem East’s Stephanie Curtin also qualified at 10 feet.
