Slide show: Friday event raises money for ‘West Side Story’

The Blue Masques, Riverhead High School’s drama club, held a cabaret night and Chinese auction at Diliberto Winery in Jamesport Friday in an effort to raise money for the group’s pricy spring production, “West Side Story.” (Scroll down for more photos.)

The event was organized by high school chorus teacher Dena Tishim and middle school English teacher Jessica Guadagnino, who are co-directing the production, scheduled for March 24, 25, 30 and 31.

And funds are needed — to the tune of about $10,000 — because it’s a big production with around 60 students, the organizers said. The show requires much set-building and a large pit orchestra, as well as many costumes.

Winery owners Sal and Maryann Diliberto are Ms. Tishim’s parents.

Mr. Diliberto was busy in the kitchen for much of the night, making homemade pizzas for the guests. Chinese auction prizes included tickets to Atlantis Marine World, beauty items from Robert James Salon, photos by Steve Berger and gift certificates to Jamesport Country Store.

More than 30 local businesses donated a slew of items. The money raised Friday night and cash from ticket sales are expected to defray the costs of the production, organizers said.
