William Francis Andes Sr.

William Francis Andes Sr. died March 13 at his home in Riverhead. He was 84.

He was born April 1, 1927, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, to John and Florence (Fanning) Andes, the middle of three sons. He graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Brooklyn, was drafted and served in the U. S. Army from 1945 to 1946.

After graduating from Saint Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., Mr. Andes played semi-professional ice hockey, including against the Japanese National Team in Japan. He went on to earn a law degree from St. John’s University in Brooklyn.

He married Victoria Sikora and they moved to Riverhead, where they raised five children and where Mr. Andes was an attorney. Family members said he enjoyed hockey and was an avid New York Rangers fan.

Predeceased by his wife in 2005, he is survived by his sons, William Jr. and John, both of Riverhead, and Stephen, of Roanoke, Va.; his daughters, Virginia Troyan of Riverhead and Joan, of Jamesport; and 11 grandchildren.

Visiting hours will take place Friday, March 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A service will be held Saturday, March 17, at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, followed by interment at the church cemetery.
