Riverhead police have arrested a Riverhead man after he allegedly stole a vehicle in Southampton, led three police agencies on a chase through the two towns Tuesday morning and then ditched the car and fled on foot.

Tremel Kelly, 19, of Riverhead was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, resisting arrest and arrested on an unrelated Riverhead bench warrant, said Riverhead police Det. Tim Hubbard.

The vehicle pursuit started in Southampton police’s jurisdiction, with Riverhead joining the chase about 10:30 a.m.

The suspect eventually fled his vehicle on foot near the Millbrook Gables neighborhood in Riverhead, Det. Hubbard said. Southampton police took the suspect’s vehicle and police searched the area for more than five hours, eventually catching Mr. Kelly at 4:00 p.m, police said.

He was processed and held for arraignment.
