Firemen report seeing teens setting fires in Riverhead

The Riverhead Fire Department was called to a brush fire at about 10:20 p.m. Thursday night off Bayberry Path and Willow Pond Drive, north of Sound Avenue near Doctors Path.

Riverhead police and the fire marshal were also called to the scene after firefighters reported seeing a group of 25 to 30 teens setting fires in the woods and jumping in cars on adjacent Sandpiper Drive, attempting to leave the scene when police and firefighters arrived.

No further information was immediately available.

Shortly after the Bayberry Path fire, at about 11 p.m., the fire department responded to a dumpster fire at the Fairfield Pines East apartment complex on 1355 Roanoke Avenue, where dumpster fires have been a frequent occurrence in the past few years.

The Riverhead Fire Department had also responded to a brush fire off Nugent Drive, near Calverton Hills, hours earlier.
