Open Riverhead school board seats to go uncontested

Two local residents are running uncontested for this year’s open Riverhead school board seats, school officials said Tuesday.

Tom Carson, owner of the Farm Country Kitchen on West Main Street in Riverhead, and Aquebogue resident Susan Koukounas, who previously served on the PTO, will run unopposed at the May 15 vote, said district clerk Barbara O’Kula.

The deadline for candidates to submit petitions to run was 5 p.m. yesterday, Monday.

Mr. Carson was not immediately available to speak about the election, and Ms. Koukounas was unable to be reached for comment.

The two candidates will run to fill the vacant seats left by Willie Hsiang and long-time board member Timothy Griffing.

Mr. Hsiang was appointed to the Riverhead school board last July after ex-board member Angela DeVito unexpectedly resigned from the board the month before.

Mr. Griffing, who has served on the school board since 2003, has decided not to run for reelection.
