Riverhead Best Buy not among 50 stores slated for closure

TIM GANNON PHOTO | Best Buy in Riverhead will remain open when the electronics chain closes 50 stores next year.

The Best Buy store in Riverhead Centre on Route 58 is not among the 50 stores slated for closure nationwide by the Minnesota-based electronics chain.

The company, which reported a fourth-quarter loss of $1.7 billion, announced on March 28 that it would close 50 of its “big box” stores nationwide, while opening 100 smaller “Best Buy Mobile” stores in 2013. At the time, the company didn’t identify which stores would close.

On Saturday, it made that list public, with only one store in New York state being on that list, and the Riverhead store not among them.

Riverhead Centre already saw one of its larger tenants, Borders Books, go out of business last fall, followed soon after by the Boulder Creek Steakhouse. Both of those sites are still vacant.
